With spring comes Capoeira...

Another winter day, milder, but still pretty frigid and sure enough it's gotten to THAT point. The point in a Toronto winter where you just reach the point where you can't take it anymore... no more triple blankets in your half-heated apartment, no more icy wind burn while you stand waiting for a streetcar, no more turning on pulse24 to see that it's "-5" when really it's -20 with the windchill.

Today I started my protest by planning a "tropical dining" event with friends for next week and by getting some HOT food for dinner. While I stand in line at Salad King (see a previous BlogTO about their SPICY goodness) I come across a flyer for Grupo AxĂŠ Capoeira. Sure enough, a Capoeira event coming up on March 27th, right here in the frigid city... (read on!)

If you haven't seen Capoeira before, the most succint way to describe it would be, well, EXHILARATING. Imagine spectacular martial artists teamed up with brazilian drum and dance. It's cultural performance at its finest. Capoeiratoronto.com explains:

"Capoeira is a form of martial art developed in Brazil over 400 years ago that combines self-defense with elements of brazilian music and dance."

When summer hits, many of these groups hit the streets of the city to perform (as seen in the pics which are courtesy of Grupo AxĂŠ's website). They've even livened up the desolate Dundas Square, but for now (brrr), indoor action will have to do.

You can check out the show at 2pm on Sunday March 27th at the Al Green Theatre (750 Spadina @ Bloor). More info & tickets @ cmbola@hotmail.com or 647-892.2652.
