Mein Kampf ... or is it?

Playing till April 10th, the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama Presents Mein Kampf: A Farce by George Tabori.

Mein Kampf, means "My Struggle", which in George Tabori's rendition is actually the title of a book in progress written by Shlomo Herzl. Herzl, a Jew, played by Daniel Krolik, mothers the rather uncouth and arrogant Hitler, played by Scott Moore.

I was entertained with the idea of Hitler being an artiste. You know, an artiste in the sense of the 'you don't understand me because I'm an artiste' way. This idea turns Hilter into a rather petulant brat during the time when being infamously rejected from the arts school.

The play, quite large in monologues and exposition (re: talky) in the first half, is redeemed in the second half when Frau Death, played by Susan Hamann, enters the picture. Humorous lines of suggestion move the story towards the inevitable of Hilter eventually becoming a politician at the suggestion of Herzl.

Still, while the play still draws a parallel with history, I've always wondered how different the world would've been had Hilter been accepted into arts school.
