The Great Canadian Laugh-Off
The Great Canadian Laugh-Off, a stand-up contest with a whopping $25,000 first prize, held its semi-finals last night at Yuk-Yuk's on Richmond street.
Comics and audiences love self-deprecating humour, maybe a bit too much. Two Jamaican comics attacked their Jamaican-ness: In imitating a guy admiring a plump bottom one said, "Girl you got a butt-y, me like you butt it round and you healt-y". The chubby girls sheepishly teased their own thighs, and the ugly guys discussed the pros and cons of Lavalife. We ate it up gleefully.
Best joke: One comic questioned the Black Eyed Peas song "My Humps", suggesting that it sounds like Fergie has cancerous tumors, which are, in fact, not sexy.
Worst Joke: Impersonation of a Reggae remix of a Beatles song. After the set, the host hinted that the comic may have gotten the gig through sexual favours.
The finals aren't until February 6, so maybe I'll remind you when the time comes. Maybe.
