Artsweek, Canned.

This just in via apologetic e-bulletin -- The Board of Directors of Toronto Arts Council Foundation has decided to discontinue the production of ArtsWeek.

In the words of Claire Hopkinson, Exec Director of the TAC & TAC Foundation:

"The arts environment in Toronto is much different than it was when ArtsWeek was created in 1986. Toronto was not then the festival city that it is today, and few opportunities existed for small and medium arts organizations and individual artists to showcase their work to a broad audience. We are confident that the arts community no longer lacks these opportunities and that TACF resources can be directed in a more meaningful way."

Still, the universal appeal of Artsweek made it a great event for the city.

The bulletin came equipped with a long list of neighbourhood festivals and arts exhibits that artists could now turn to, but most are just not as diverse because of their size or niche appeal. At the same time I'm looking to seeing if they'll all be receiving a little extra funding this year. *ah hem*
