Gallery Space: Death and Roaming Galleries

O'er here in the blogTO Arts section we receive dozens and dozens of e-mails about gallery openings, exhibitions, festivals and the like. Now that spring is in the air, the e-mails are, well, pretty much multiplying like rabbits. While I'll be the first to say that you can never be too much art in the city, there are certainly a few too many events for one group of bloggers to attend, review, profile, etc.

So then, may I present: Gallery Space. Every Thursday, I'll be compiling a detailed list of notable openings, closings and ongoing exhibits happening in town. You may never spend another Friday night at home.

Apertura Gallery will host their inaugural show tonight, April 27th at 6pm. Apertura is a new roaming gallery that will host curated openings in various locations across town. Tonight's location is 1096 Queen W (at Dovercourt). This exhibit will feature emerging artists with work ranging from brushwork to sculpture. 'Tis free but an invite-only affair, so Loop Gallery (1174 Queen W) is hosting a double opening tonight at 6pm: Weave, new paintings by Laura Ciruls and Ode II Joy, new paintings by Elizabeth Babyn -- both featuring colourful abstract work. This exhibit runs until M 21, 2006

April 28th at 7pm, Gallery 44 (401 Richmond W. #120) is having a spring fundraising art sale. The event, Photopia, will exhibit photographic works by a long list of Gallery 44 members and other invited artists. Admission is free, so save your cash for the artwork, all of which will be for sale. They'll also be holding a licensed lottery ($10 per ticket) on opening night with some amazing art-related prizes... too many to list! The art sale will continue on April 29 & 30, 11am-5pm.

For something a little more low-key, try Conversations of the Moment, by Jeannie Bennett Guillet. Exhibit opens Saturday April 29 from 2-5pm, at Rebecca Gallery (317 Grace St (at Harbord))

Finally, closing this weekend is The "How Did You Die?" Show. You may have caught this exhibit during Artsweek last year as the artist, Lisa Cruji, has been touring it around well. It features 40 mixed media pieces (pictured above) exploring stories of life and death. Morbidly wonderful. See it at the Eastern Front Gallery (250A Queen E, at Broadview) until April 30th.
