October 12: This week in Gallery Space

This space is mine, all mine! (evil maniacal laughter).

This is Carrie, writing on behalf of Tanja who is away having loads of fun looking at other people's (not Torontonians) art; but since it is the Louvre and Uffizi, we will just have to find it in our hearts to forgive her. (I'm being a brat).

Found in Translation, Interpreting Elements of Japanese Design opens on October 13 at the Japan Foundation, 131 Bloor Street West, 2cd Floor the Colonnade. Curated by Arlene Gehring, the show features the works of Lorraine Pritchard, Judith Fielder, Nieves Carrasco and Marta Dal Farra, all who speak "with different accents" the traditional Japanese vocabulary in craft. Now, the reception on Friday, 6:30-8:30 and the Artists' Talk and Panel Discussion on November 3, same time, are both RSVP only. The show is open Mon-Fri: 11:30-4:30, Thurs: until 7. Saturdays: Oct. 14, Nov. 4, Dec. 2 & Jan. 6, 12-5.

Recently, in a post For the Social Butterfly, I mentioned the SOUNDplay festival, which runs until October 25. The lineup for Peformance Weekend is pretty stellar. Get a 3-Day Festival pass at $25/$20 for students and Pleasure Dome members and catch all the performances, films, installations and panels by Wet Gate, Michael Snow, Dufort, Phh!k, and Flicker Films @ the Latvian House, 491 College St.or pay $15/$10 at the door on October 13/14, $5 at the door on October 15. There is really too much going on for me to do justice here, so make sure you check out their website.

Shape Shifters opens at The Red Head Gallery, 401 Richmond Street West, Suite 115; the reception is this Saturday and runs Wed - Sat: 12-5 until November 4. This is the 2cd joint exhibition for artists J. Lynn Campbell and Anne O'Callaghan.

The Beach Studio Tour Fall 2006 kicks off tomorrow night, Friday 13 from 6-9 pm, and continues Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 11-6. Not to undermine the galleries, I feel attending these free self-guided studio tours are not only a great way to directly support connect with local area artists in a relaxed and more approachable environment, they are a lot of fun too.

"Bear" will be screened at Paul Petro Contemporary Art, 980 Queen St. W, October 13-November 11, 2006, Wed-Sat 11-5. Su Rynard's video installation, Bear, has been screened previously in Switzerland and Poland. The reception is this Friday the 13, 7-10. Stephen Colbert would be less than pleased.
