January 26th, 2007 - This week in the gallery space:

The newest gallery on the block, scratch gallery (1358 Bathurst St), proudly debuted this week with an inaugural group exhibit called, sampler. The exhibit features 12 diverse Canadian artists, both emerging and established. The exhibit runs 'til February 24th.

Over at Tatar Gallery (600 King St W, 4th floor), curator William Huffman brings the work of Finnish artist, Jaakko Pernu, to Canada for the first time. Inspired by the historic wood craft in Finland, Pernu creates absolutely enourmous wooden installations (as seen here).

You can catch a glimpse of his work now through to March 25th.

akau inc (1186 Queen St W), brings together my two favourite places, Toronto and New York, in their latest brilliant exhibit, Folded Landscapes - Unfolding Maps.

One piece in particular, by Gwen MacGregor, consists of two animated works that were created using data from a GPS device. Over a period of 3 months, MacGregor transformed the information into mobile line drawings.

This one opens today and runs until March 31st.
