The Movement Movement Runs Again
Pull up your high socks and lace up those runners, The Movement Movement is at it again. As you might recall from the Arts Now Podcast #6, The Movement Movement is a "social movement to run the world's art institutions, one kilometer at a time." More art project than physical exercise, they aim to take on social expectations like "don't run in the art gallery" and break them into pieces.
Having ran the ROM with them back in May, I can say that it was an absolute blast. Several hundred runners converged on the still-under construction Royal Ontario Museum and made several laps through the building to make for a health 5 Km run (video after the break). Now, the gals from The Movement Movement are at it again, with plans to run several more institutions still this year.
The force behind TMM are Jessica Rose and Jenn Goodwin, and are in fact behind many other art projects throughout the city, not to mention that they're both organizers of Nuit Blanche.
Rose has been one of the more vocal opponents to the ongoing development in Queen West where her studio is located. In fact, on top of the funerals she's had for some of the buildings in Queen West slated for demolition, The Movement Movement is planning a run in Trinity-Bellwoods Park on September 15 to "make a statement by making your mark about the development by drawing a line in the neighbourhood."
Their work will be shown at MOCCA up until this Sunday, August 19 and will be running the Mississauga Art Gallery and Blackwood Gallery on November 3.
