Kelly and the Kellygirls at The Drake Underground in Toronto

Kelly and the Kellygirls Play Well Together

While not on the official schedule for the Toronto International Film Festival, there was an offbeat little worldwide premiere at The Drake Hotel Underground Friday night.

Kelly Doesn't Play Well was a frank and entertaining mini documentary which followed the enigmatic lead singer R. Kelly Clipperton and his exploits on tour with his latest bandmates in Kelly and the Kellygirls.

The film sparked sufficient interest and intrigue in the crowd, who were treated to a short but lively set following the screening.

Wearing more body glitter than My Little Pony, Clipperton strutted around the stage, often striking poses like Annie Lennox or David Bowie, trying not to ham it up too much, acknowledging that his mom was in the audience. Still, he sung his heart out, even with a little French and Italian thrown in for good measure.

This was the start to an evening which featured New Yorker Eli Escobar, Times Neue Roman and Styrofoam Ones, with DJ sets by More Proof in between.

Following is a mini photo slideshow of Kelly and the Kellygirls' set:
