On exhibit right now at the Department is a stunning collection of large format images by Joanna Ferraro that offers a distorted and hazy take on rural landscapes. Unlike the super-saturated and and perfectly sharp shots that one might find of such subject matter on Flickr and 500px, Ferraro's photos intentionally lack the vibrancy and full depth of field that have become the hallmarks of this style of photography. In the absence of these elements, Ferraro's images tend to gesture to way that we construct such idealized places through bouts of nostalgia. They're beautiful, yes — but in a subdued manner. Instead of delivering these scenes in all their fullness, viewers are treated to what might be best described as photographs of memories.
