The Toronto International Art Fair in photos

Art Toronto 2011 brought out the elite of Toronto's arts community for its annual extravaganza of contemporary artwork from Toronto and beyond. Turning the Metro Toronto Convention Centre into a giant gallery, the fair remains one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of work by major artists outside of the big galleries like the AGO and ROM. Lacking the type of organizing theme that you'd typically find at a gallery show, however, the modus operandi here is to show off the participating galleries and to help art dealers connect with prospective buyers.

In addition to the offerings from the various galleries, Kent Monkman returned with an onsite project that might have been the highlight of the fair. Constructed out of the same materials used to build the various gallery booths, The Art Game parodies the contemporary art world by acting as something of funhouse maze, complete with trick doors and windows. How does one navigate in this strange place, and are the right decisions merely the product of chance? Those are two questions, no doubt, that more than one savvy art collector has asked.
