Baker Street was first established in 1978 and is now one of the city's most popular sources for cheesecake, cake and cupcakes.

Way before lockdowns and restrictions, the business actually started out as a home-based project.

It was founded by two sisters, Mary Somerton and Esther Kravice.

"They began in their home over the desire to create sweet treats for everyone," Baker Street HR administrator Erica Lupetto tells blogTO.

While Lupetto isn't a family relative, she's been with Baker Street for 12 years. Outside of that, the company is basically a total family affair.

Somerton and Kravice still actively run the bakery to this day, along with their children Leah, Jessica, Jason and Dylan.

They're probably best known for their popular cheesecakes which are considered some of the best in Toronto.

They credit their popularity and what makes their cheesecakes special to a recipe created by the sisters many, many years ago that use both real cream cheese and sour cream.

Their other best-selling items include the strawberry shortcake, carrot cake and chocolate truffle cake.

Located on The West Mall in Etobicoke, Baker Street operates solely as a wholesale business, but their products are easily found at retail grocery stores such as Sobeys and Real Canadian Superstore.

"Over the years, like many companies, Baker Street has had to evolve in many market conditions," says Lupetto, when asked about challenges faced over the past few years.

"While ensuring that we created a very safe environment for our employees, we were still able to operate and grow over the past few years."

In the future, they're hoping to innovate and continue to create new products, while still preserving the quality they've always been known for.
