Wanda's Pie in the Sky
Wanda’s Pie in the Sky is known for having some of the best pie, cheesecake, and slices of cake in Toronto. Started by OCAD student Wanda Beaver, their cherry pie has a serious reputation by now and the bakery is award-winning.
Though the business started out with Beaver delivering pies via TTC, they’ve since expanded to serving vegetarian lunches including popular and reasonably priced pierogis.
This place is Kensington Market all the way, adorned in funky colours, sketches by local artists, and posters and ads for local events and businesses. There’s a sidewalk patio and window ledge bar seating but tables are mostly pretty small and cozy, except for a large six-person spot.
Fruit pies range from $10.50 for a six-inch to $39.95 for an eleven-inch, $5.75 for a slice.
A whole cherry pie is decorated beautifully with a soft flaky crust and a tart filling that perfectly balances out the overall sweetness. Beware though, because their version of cherry pie contains almonds.
Every single item in here is made right in the back, just feet from where they’re sold, fresh every day.
One whole cake is made per day for slices ($5.95).
On the day of my visit it’s a moist, spiced carrot cake enhanced by chunky walnuts, pineapple and coconut with a rich, savoury cream cheese icing.
Mango chiffon cheesecake is also on offer for slices while I’m there. It’s exploding with fruit flavour, a dense base of regular cheesecake with a classic graham crust, topped with a mango cream and a glassy layer of mango puree.
They also bake a wide variety of smaller handheld pastries like croissants, muffins, several kinds of brownies (including vegan ones), dulce de leche macaroons, and chocolate almond kisses.
There are smaller savoury goods too, like pizza pockets and pizza topped with tofu pepperoni.
Gluten-free Huevos Wanda ($5.25) fills a tortilla cup with a scramble with refried beans, cheddar and salsa verde. For Eggs Wanda, a crispy croissant dough is filled with spinach mushroom bechamel and topped with a poached egg and cheese.
Of course, where would all this be if you couldn’t accompany it with fair trade, organic coffee. Drip starts at $2.05, and it’s only natural that coconut, almond and soy milk are all available.
It’s a vegetarian’s dream in here, with salads, quiches, soups, sandwiches and even a veggie burger that cater to sensitive and health-conscious diets.
On any given day delicious monkey bread or French toast could be on special. Just let your nose guide you into this heavenly bakery and find out for yourself.
