Welcome to the first Bookmark This! post of twenty oh eight! A smattering of Toronto's literary events, summarized.

You love Celine Dion. You know it. Then make sure, on Wednesday, you go to this month's TINARS event featuring her biggest fan, music critic and author Carl Wilson!

Tuesday, January 8th:

Crime Writers of Canada, in conjunction with Casa Loma, has created an exciting reading series featuring internationally renowned Canadian crime writers. Tonight, see Giles Blunt and Louise Penny.

Tonight is the Art Bar Poerty Reading Series annual Audience Appreciation Night! Enjoy short readings by the Art Bards: Valentino Assenza, Heather Cadsby, Rudy Fearon, Colleen Flood, Cynthia Gould, Alison Hancock, Stephen Humphrey, Francine Lewis, and Myna Wallin, and live music with gypsy jazz trio, Red Rhythm. Each audience member will receive a chapbook of poetry by the Art Bar team and no hat will be passed.
Clinton's. 8pm. Free.

Wednesday, January 9th:

This Is Not A Reading Series presents music critic and 33 1/3 contributor Carl Wilson, who spent a year analyzing Celine Dion's global popularity. He presents his results in his new book Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste, and will discuss his findings with philosopher Mark Kingwell.
Gladstone Hotel Ballroom. 7pm. Free.

Thursday, January 10th:

Steven Heighton, author of the novel Afterlands, is reading as part of York University's Canadian Writers in Person Lecture Series. For more information, contact Professor Stephen Cain at sjcain@yorku.ca or at 416-736-2100 ext. 44017.

Join Indigo CEO Heather Reisman as she interviews Sir Jackie Stewart, winner of three F1 World Championships and 27 Grand Prix races. They'll discuss his autobiography, Winning is Not Enough. Book signing to follow. No memorabilia please.

Friday, January 11th:

Stan Rogal, author of As Good As Dead (Pedlar Press, 2007), is reading as part of the IV Lounge Reading Series. Also appearing is poet Irene Marques (Wearing Glasses of Water) and novelist Thea Lim (The Same Woman).
IV Lounge. 8pm. Free.

Monday, January 14th:

Christie Blatchford (Fifteen Days) and Kevin Patterson (Outside the Wire) will discuss Canadian accounts of war from their new books. Part of U of T Bookstore's reading series.
Hart House Library. 7:30pm. Free.
