Watching Television: Me or someone like me

Stats Can recently released a study saying that the face of Canada, particularly in the 3 major cities: Vancouver, Montreal with the brunt of it in Toronto, will change dramatically in the year 2017. They predict by that time over half of the country's population will be visible minorities ie: non-European.

Gee ... I could've told you that. All anyone needs to do is take the TTC during rush hour to make that prediction. But my issue isn't the inevitable. In fact, I welcome the change with open arms. My issue is whether or not the mainstream media will step up to the plate and represent for the growing half of the population who are virtually invisible and/or misrepresented.

In Toronto we have City TV that does its best to promote diversity in the newsroom and their many magazine shows, while the CBC does their best to promote diversity in dramatic programming with the cultural revolving doors on This Is Wonderland and Da Vinci's Inquest. ... That leaves, Global, whose sole dramatic program, Train 48, has at most 4 characters who are visible minorities and CTV who has so much potential with their acclaimed yet cancelled shows but could still do better.

Then there are the OMNI stations, whose sole purpose is all about celebrating diversity intercuting their programming with high class shows such as Elimidate and Cheaters. Unfortunately their sole Canadian English-language dramatic program Metropia, is a mixing pot of scandal rather than actual drama, more Jerry Springer than Days of Our Lives. *Sigh* They try, but I think the closest primetime programming has gotten with a semi-accurate portrayal of multiculturalism are the chaotic courtrooms on This is Wonderland.

Does anybody need a writer because I'm completely available?
