Remember when you were a kid and all you wanted to do was smash something? Smash it good. Out with the old, in with the new. So one can understand the excitement at watching a building come down. But is there such a thing as a little too much excitement? Saturday marked the end of one era and the start of another with the demolition of the former 51 Division building in Regent Park.

The much maligned stationhouse, once known as Fort Apache (a better movie than nickname), has moved out of the notorious neighbourhood to be replaced by townhouses as part of a revitalization plan by Toronto Community Housing. Over the many years, tensions ran high, accusations flew fast and furious and scandals emerged, but through it all, the cops did their job. Now, with municipal dignitaries on hand, the rundown building is no more. Some glad to usher in a new beginning, others a little too glad to watch the yellow brick walls come down.

Lately, there seems to be more animosity generated towards the cops, beginning (and maybe ending) with the former Chief debacle. Sooner of later, it's good to move on and hopefully the new housing will do a lot of good but still, go show a cop you care. Stop one on the street and just say thanks. Heck, maybe even buy 'em a donut.
