Morning Brew: November 14, 2006
Your morning news roundup for Tuesday, November 14, 2006:
It's the day after our municipal election, and apart from a few notable exceptions, it looks like Toronto residents are sending a familiar bunch back to city hall.
Mayor David Miller was re-elected as mayor by a large margin, and used his victory speech to already start pushing for more money from the province and feds. Lots of work ahead for you, Mr. Mayor.
Miller's main rival, Jane Pitfield, has decided to call it quits from municipal politics. Of course, Michael Jordan said he was retiring three times before he actually did too.
The Toronto basketball player who was shot in Pittsburgh earlier this year is showing a remarkable recovery.
The Hockey Hall of Fame inducted four new players last night, which means Sportsnet News may finally end the non-stop Patrick Roy interviews and retrospectives that have taken up half the show for the past week.
They've already taken away our garbage bins as a security measure, but now the TTC looks like it will be getting an influx of cash to make the system safer and more secure. As long as they don't take away our benches as well.
After a particularly bad weekend for downtown violence which saw one Toronto police officer stabbed and several club patrons injured, John Tory is calling for increased safety measures in the core, while Toronto Police are backing him up by calling for more cameras on the streets.
Police in the west end of the city found an SUV in Lake Ontario this morning. Hey car thieves: just because it works in the East River in New York, it doesn't mean that Lake Ontario is a good dumping ground for stolen goods.
