Canadian Cash, Now Easier To Carry

According to a CBC report this afternoon, the mint is looking to introduce a limited edition 1,000,000 coin... yep, you counted those zeros right, a million dollar coin.

Picture the scene now: Opening moments of the new ground-breaking Canadian spy film and Agent X walks in with a glistening stainless-steel briefcase. "You got the cash?" asks Agent Y. "Of course," replies Agent X.. never one for questions.

He sets it down on the poker table, flips up one latch, then the next... the frame speed slows down now as the briefcase opens dramatically. And there, before the bewildered eyes of Agent Y (the stiff Brit counterpart obviously) is the object of his desires. Sitting on a jewellery-box-like velvet shelf, it sparkles under a solo spotlight the room has suddenly been cast in... yes, the Canadian million dollar coin. He reaches for it as the cast of Bon Cop Bad Cop crash through the door and the lights go out.

Ok, realistically speaking, this is a new era for those of us who like to carry cash. Tired of all these toonies weighing me down, I eagerly inquired with friends at local Toronto BMO, TD and Scotia branches as to whether or not they'll be 'carrying' the coin in local branches. They assure me that if it is, in fact, minted, the masses will probably have to get theirs directly from the source. 'Scuse me as I subscribe to the Mint newsletter.
