Of the internships that I've done, a few have been of the photocopying, filing, and buy-coffee-for-your-supervisor variety. The internship I did with the Toronto public space magazine Spacing, however, was not one of them. For emerging writers, journalists, and urban enthusiasts, there aren't many young organizations in the city with Spacing's reputation and connections, and they give their interns real responsibilities to make sure they get more out of the internship other than just a reference.

This year Spacing is putting together a team to focus on the upcoming provincial election, and they're looking for new interns to help with their coverage. Keep reading after the jump to learn more about the position.

Spacing is looking for students with an interest in local issues and public space causes (ie: transit, traffic, infrastructure, development/housing, environment, and municipal affairs). The internship is tailored to journalism students, but Spacing will consider each applicant that demonstrates strong writing/reporting skills, and an ability to be self-motivated, creative, and work independently.

Writers will be expected to cover press conferences, write profiles of candidates/ridings, report on specific topics and breaking events, and spend time over the summer familiarizing themselves with issues relevant to Spacing's coverage. The magazine will offer a few small workshops over the summer with experienced reporters/writers of previous elections.

DEADLINE: Monday April 30th. Spacing will conduct interviews before the deadline for applicants that are going to be out of town in May. The earlier you get in your application the earlier you get an interview.

APPLICATION: Please include a cover letter explaining your interest in this internship, your experience/interest in local public space issues, and your educational background. Also include three writing samples (maximum). Please specify when you'd like to do your interview (we are available Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11-6).

Sounds like they're going easier on this year's interns -- I spent ages thinking up the "cheeky questions" for the mayor that were part of last year's application...
