Your Toronto morning news roundup for Wednesday April 30th, 2008:

Toronto and Mississauga police discovered what might be the largest meth lab in Canadian history. They can't confirm the size of the haul, but hope to be able to do just that after a couple more days (?!) of sorting through the industrial facility. Uh oh!

City council was busy making big decisions (and deferring a crucial one to a later date):
- more red light cameras are coming to an intersection near you (previously debated on blogTO)
- an underground tunnel along York St. joining Union Station to the PATH system has been given the go-ahead.
- the critical TTC essential service question will be deferred to September (and the Star article contains what might be the best photo of Mayor Miller ever, so do click through)

Within just 2 years, Ontario could reach such a lowly financial status that we would qualify for federal equalization payments. The shift from "powerhouse" to "have-not" will be so drastic that Ontarians are scrambling to buy wheelbarrows now (while they can afford them) in anticipation of using them to cart their money to the bread lines in 2011.

After a 17-year hiatus, "The Toronto Criterium" (a road cycling race centered on the St. Lawrence Market area), is back. Kids, amateurs, and pros will all have an opportunity to race their bikes on May 30th. It won't be as loud and dirty as the Toronto Grand Prix auto race (which won't take pace this summer due to league politics and scheduling issues).

And in local media and restaurant non-headline news, CityTV writer Romas Zabas won an eating bet posed by Queen West's Fusaro's Kitchen and as a result they've named their hefty meatball sandwich after him (video).
