Your Toronto morning news roundup for Tuesday July 8th, 2008:

Howard Moscoe wants to bring the sledgehammer down on companies that post illegal billboards that are infringing on driver attentiveness on the 401. Drivers on the Gardiner, on the other hand, have already had all the attentiveness sucked out of them, so let's not go there.

George Brown College is expanding and will have a new campus and residences built on the waterfront between Jarvis and Cherry St. The announcement and location stir memories of the old 'tent city' controversy.

Want beer in corner and grocery stores in Ontario? Sign the beer petition! But where's the imported wine petition? Private citizens in Ontario are tired of playing by the The Beer Store and LCBO's restrictive rules. I know I want choice, not to have choices made for me.

A second Order of Canada medal has been returned in protest of Toronto-based doctor Henry Morgentaler. That's cool... they can give it to someone else, who deserves AND wants it, regardless if a man, who has fought a life-long battle for women's rights to choose, shares the same distinction.

A fatal accident that occurred early this morning on the 401 near Milton is now being investigated as a road rage incident. It's believed that one car intentionally cut off another, spurring the accident which resulted in the death of a driver. Someone out there is now guilty of far more than a traffic violation.

With increases in TTC ridership come increases in crime. A steady increase in the number of criminal charges (many being theft of personal electronic devices) has been observed through 2006 and 2007. While the transferable, non-personalized Metropass has reduced instances of fare fraud, I have to wonder: are the newer passes now a more attractive target for muggers?
