Your Toronto morning news roundup for Tuesday August 5th, 2008:

It baffles me that, even when the police announce that they're going to be doing a blitz on highways for the weekend, over 5,000 people still manage to get caught on driving-related charges over the long weekend. What's even scarier is that about 140 of those people were caught street racing at speeds over 50 kilometres faster than the speed limit.

Charges have been laid against the legal guardian of Katelynne Sampson, the 7-year-old that became Toronto's 39th homicide victim this past weekend — proving once again that you can never really know whom to trust.

People that were out at Bluffer's Park enjoying the lake over the long weekend may have been a bit shocked to find a man's body in the water. Not quite the holiday experience people expect.

A Toronto police officer found himself the target of gunshots yesterday after following a vehicle to a shopping centre parking lot at 3am. The officer is okay, his car, not so much.

In not-so-related but equally-disturbing news, a man was sent to hospital after a routine parking inspection left him with injuries after an altercation with the police officer. The SIU has been called to investigate the incident..

The high-speed rail link from Union Station to the airport seems to be well under way — that is, of course, until the province and the Feds start to once again say that they're cutting funding.

And to end the day on a high note, the Blue Jays beat the Oakland Athletics last night on the back of Hallada's excellent pitching performance. On a not-so-high note: the Jays are still almost ten games out of a playoff spot.
