What's happening in the GTA:
Yesterday a student was stabbed at C.W. Jefferys high school (better known as "the school where Jordan Manners was shot and killed"), which has Torontonians wondering about security and asking why there isn't police presence there. Security camera footage might play a role in the investigation, although cameras appear to have failed to act as a deterrent.
Although I'm fully behind the rights of women to breastfeed their children in public spaces, I'm not sure I can back the woman embroiled in a dispute over feeding while IN a public swimming pool. Pool water isn't exactly a tasty or clean thing for a baby's mouth, and when you're swimming, you're essentially sharing a giant vat of liquid with everyone else in the pool. Breastfeeding poolside, on the other hand, seems like a far more reasonable choice, for everyone's comfort.
The plastics industry (which is fighting the city tooth and nail over a proposal to give consumers a discount for refusing to use plastic shopping bags) has a new, fierce opponent - vest-and-kilt-sporting sixth grade private school students. According to (biased or not?) plastics industry experts, offering a discount will end up costing consumers $400 more annually on their grocery bill.
A 29-year old school teacher is being hailed as a hero after she risked her own life to save two people from a burning building in Etobicoke. She recounts the details of the harrowing incident to the National Post. A tip of the hat to you, Natalia, for being so brave.
And finally, there's a really cool story in the Star that discusses Toronto's relative lack of demand for a diverse colour palette. We tend to be transfixed on greys, greens, and blues. Should we be looking to pretty things up with a little splash of red and yellow here and there?
