Bad Hair Day

What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

If there ever were a day to actually see people fly through the air with the greatest of ease, yesterday was that day. High winds were the talk of the town - and province - yesterday. Aside from felled trees, lost power and blown over trucks the winds also wreaked havoc on flights at Pearson airport, just what the already beleaguered airlines didn't need as they were playing catch-up with stranded holiday passengers. At least our dinner guests' feet remained planted on the ground; they were half expecting otherwise on their way over.

Mention transit in the GTA and you won't find anybody who disagrees that it could and should be expanded. There are more agencies, organizations and people devoted to improved transit in the region you'd think we were unavoidably destined for improvement. But in totally Toronto style, the organization that is most well positioned to take the lead, Metrolinx, has been hijacked from the start, writes Christopher Hume. I don't know what he's talking about... why would Metrolinx need actual money or power?

Bad news for yachtsman Derek Hatfield, who sails out of the Port Credit Yacht Club and was the only Canadian in the Vendee Globe round-the-world boat race. He was forced to pull out, spoiling his chance to become the first Canadian to ever complete the impossibly-difficult sounding race. He was felled by 5 meter waves and 150 km/h winds. I guess Toronto's weather yesterday wasn't so bad, which also makes me wonder if Port Credit really offers the best waters for Vendee training.

Over at Warden Woods Community Center there's a heart-warming story every Thursday night. Actually, a belly warming story. Coco flying fish, injera, sweet semolina cake and tiramisu are a far cry from the more basic fare I associate with community kitchens.

Another shooting in Toronto yesterday, this time at a Gabby's on Kingston Road. Although the victim needed surgery and is still in critical condition, she seems to be fine. So what's so remarkable? Oh, right, she took a cab to the hospital. I kinda wonder, if I'm the cabby, who do I ask to pay the fare? Shortly after on the opposite end of town a bullet found its way into the wall of a house. Police are baffled by this one; no word on whether the house hailed a cab.
