TTC unveils mobile trip planner, but where's the GPS?

The TTC's Trip Planner website is now available as a mobile app for your phone. The slimmed down version offers a "full" or "quick" version of the regular trip planner, which has now gone into full production after the beta version was unveiled earlier this year.

As far as I can tell, the mobile app seems fairly kink-free, but glaringly absent is some form of GPS technology to determine your start location. A mobile app should make use of the whole "mobile" aspect in some or relevant way, no? A step further would be an option to integrate the TTC's SMS next arrival time program for streetcars based on your exact location. But that's crazy talk, I know.

The mobile version does allow users to access service alerts, schedules, fare information as well as the trip planner. The full Internet version now offers three travel options, as well as walking time. The complete version was created with consideration of some 3,400 suggestions from customers and users.

Later this fall, the TTC will unveil options for riders to filter the types of e-alerts they receive, as well as opt for SMS alerts. It will also announce plans to work with third parties, such as Google Transit, to build additional applications.

The mobile app is available at:
