I want these for Toronto. Spotted on Boston Biker, these public bike repair facilities, which have recently been installed around Cambridge, MA cost about $1000 and offer cyclists basic tools for quick-fix repairs on the road. I know this is likely silly-talk based on the priority our mayor is likely to give to cycling infrastructure, but installing a few of these at the beginning of major paths around the city (the Martin Goodman and Don Valley trails come to mind) would be relatively inexpensive and could ultimately prove very useful to riders.

The knock I've heard some people make about these is that someone would take out wire-cutters and steal the tools within a matter of days. Perhaps I'm being naive, but I'm not so sure about this. It's not as if the repair stands hold anything of much value, and if we all bought in to the "it'll-just-get-vandalized" argument, then why are we bothering with BIXI?

So what do you think? Should I submit this for the next round of funding from the Awesome Foundation? The price sure seems right...
