carjackings toronto stolen car

Video shows a stolen vehicle shipment intercepted near Toronto

Video captured in Vaughan shows the aftermath of the interception of a shipment of stolen cars, just the latest story in an unprecedented wave of auto theft in the Greater Toronto Area since last year.

The business of carjackings, driveway thefts, and the export of stolen vehicles has grown exponentially in the region since 2022. Toronto Police stated earlier this spring that in the roughly six months leading up to mid-April, investigators charged 119 people and recovered 556 vehicles stolen in Toronto alone.

One such recovery was captured on video by a motorist at a CP rail yard in Vaughan. In video shared on social media, tow trucks can be seen hauling away what are reported to be stolen vehicles from shipping containers.

Several vehicles are visible in the two clips, including a pair of Range Rover SUVs, the same type of ride Leafs' star Mitch Marner was behind the wheel of during the most high-profile carjacking in the wave of auto thefts that swept across the region last spring.

Shipping containers are regularly used by auto thieves to move their stolen merchandise from point to point, and many of these containers find their way overseas, where they are resold to unwitting buyers.

In February, York Regional Police stated that 64 vehicles had been returned to Canada after being located in shipping containers thousands of kilometres away in Malta. In 2022, vehicles stolen from owners in Toronto were tracked all the way to Nigeria.
