Second Toronto storm could bring another 30 cm of snow
Toronto's roads and sidewalks are gradually getting cleared, streetcars are getting back on track, and the city is generally digging itself out after being battered by more than 20 cm of snow overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning.
But, though cleanup efforts are taking place under currently sunny skies, residents should brace themselves for another winter storm slated to hit this weekend.
A low-pressure system is on its way north from Colorado, bringing with it what will start as a relatively light dusting of snow across much of Ontario during Saturday morning and afternoon. But, conditions will deteriorate as the day pushes on.
"Our major system will swing through southern and eastern Ontario through the overnight hours Saturday into Sunday, with widespread heavy snow expected into Sunday morning," The Weather Network (TWN) is warning alongside a forecast for up to 30 cm of snow in parts of the province — including the big city.
"Confidence is high that this weekend will definitely be another snowy event for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and all of southern Ontario. There is ample moisture and cold air to provide this system the ingredients it needs to be a heavy snow producer. This will come in two parts, however, with the greater impacts likely on Sunday," TWN added in an updated outlook Friday morning.
Though the precipitation over the course of Saturday won't seem too drastic compared to earlier in the week, it makes for messy roads and hazardous commutes by day's end, especially with gusts of wind blowing the snow around at times. And it will devolve into a heavier storm on Sunday.
"There's lower confidence in exact snowfall totals right now, but there is the potential for some areas to see just as much as we saw with the Wednesday-Thursday snowstorm this week," TWN writes, warning that GTHA cities, as well as Ottawa, will likely be getting 20 or more cm by Family Day.
