Scarpetta makes way for The Chase at Thompson Hotel
Scarpetta is headed for the deadpool. In a press release sent out this morning, The Chase has announced that it'll be taking over the Italian restaurant's space at the Thompson Hotel sometime this spring. One will recall that Scarpetta Chef Scott Conant rode into Toronto on wave of controversy after publishing an open letter to the city that was alternately perceived to be condescending and a carefully orchestrated PR move. There are so many factors that come into play when a restaurant goes bust, but perhaps Toronto never really warmed up to the star chef?
The Chase, on the other hand, is riding high. Both it and its oyster-first sister restaurant are packed most nights with a notably monied crowd. As is the case with its restaurants in the Dineen Building, this new venture will consist of two offerings. Colette will be an upscale eatery with seating for 100, while Colette Grand CafĂŠ & Bakery will act more as a grab and go counter for the King West crowd. As the name suggests, the focus will be on French fare.
While it's somewhat surprising that Scarpetta has flamed out, it's not a shock that the folks behind The Chase would target the Thompson Hotel for expansion. They know this clientele and their upscale model seems like a natural fit at a King West hotel with designs on being exclusive and hip.
