Trick-Or-Treating Not Just For The Kiddies
So you're too old to get all dressed up and go around stockpiling candy in an old pillowcase on Halloween. Not to worry, you can do your trick-or-treating at a variety of fun-loving bakeshops across the city. There is a great selection of cookies, cakes and other goodies to satisfy even the most mature sweet tooth out there.
The bakers at Queen of Tarts on Roncesvalles LOVE Halloween. They have a fun-freaking-tastic selection of cookies done in classic QOT style. Beautifully crafted scary cats, eyeballs, skulls, pumpkins plus Sally and Jack of The Nightmare Before Christmas fame. Hot off the presses! 30 Rock and Where The Wild Things Are cookies!!
Of course you'll also find Halloween themed cakes and tarts for your noshing needs there too. Plus they're holding a costume contest on Friday -- just drop by the shop in your costume and the winner will be awarded a haunted gingerbread house on Saturday.
The gals at Yummy Stuff in Parkdale have been baking up the all-holiday classic -- cupcakes! They come in standard and adorable mini sizes. Add to that some sparkly spooky cookies and call me stuffed.
Down in Kensington Wanda and Cora have been busily preparing to spook the sugar out of your tooth. Miss Cora's Kitchen will be offering deliciously ghouly cupcakes and cookies all weekend.
At Wanda's Pie in the Sky you will find brain, pumpkin and scary cat cakes, candy apples, an assortment of decorated cookies and some really sweet cupcake designs (I love the vampire mouth!).
If you haven't been to Sweet Flour since it opened this past March, now is a great time to check them out. Here you can build your own cookie that bakes in minutes, and add a little seasonal flare with pumpkin seeds and Halloween sprinkles.
They also whip up a really tasty Pumpkin Spice Latte flavoured with real pumpkin, the perfect companion to your cookie or pumpkin muffin top. And they're offering delightfully decorated sugar cookies for Halloween too.
In Yorkville you can visit the Dessert Lady for some cute little mini cupcakes, Halloween themed brownies, plus sugar or white chocolate pumpkin cookies.
If you're on the east side of downtown, you might head to the Distillery District to check out Sweet Escape Patisserie. They have a selection of scary cupcakes, dismembered gingerbread men and candy corn.
Even though it may not be socially acceptable for you to dress up as a princess or superhero anymore, there's still plenty of trick-or-mostly-treating to do for the older crowd. Happy Halloween!
