Liberty Village has plenty of patios. It's just too bad they're not always open. Despite this neighbourhood's massive development over the past decade it's still bordering on a ghost town on Saturdays and Sunday. Sure, weekend brunchers come for the pancakes at Mildred's Temple Kitchen and when the TFC has a home game this breaks all the rules. But beyond that, fun times on the patios in this 'hood are more geared for the web developers, film and TV people that make up the bulk of the weekday lunch and after work crowd.

Here's a rundown of 5 of the best patio options in Liberty Village.

Brazen Head
The kitchen here won't win any Michelin stars but when patio awards are handed out this Irish Pub nestled next to the Liberty Market Building is always a contender. The appeal is simply the sheer square footage of patio space split over three floors. $4 Ceasars for Sunday brunch and 50 cent wings on Mondays don't hurt putting bums in seats either.

Caffino
Hidden away behind the Carpet Factory, Caffino boats two casual patio spaces that balance out its slightly more formal dining interior. Stay for some of their excellent pizza or other Italian eats on one of the most secluded patios in the city and impress friends who never knew this place was here. Best during the week for lunch of after-work drinks.

Mildred's Temple Kitchen
This stylish brunch, lunch and dinner spot has a small west-facing patio, perfectly primed for the afternoon sun. Indulge in some eggs or a charcuterie plate and then feel guilty as you watch well buffed gym rats descend from the GoodLife upstairs. Better yet, keep your eyes fixed on West Elm next door and guess how many customers walk out of there with throw pillows.

School Bakery and Cafe
This quasi-themed restaurant in the old Warehouse Grill space likes to use clever words like Detention and Nightschool when describing its hours of operation. While that can be distracting, the key thing to keep in mind is they have two patios - one south facing and mostly enclosed; and the other on the east side that extends out from the giant retractable garage-like doors. The best time to go is around lunchtime any day of the week.

The Liberty
This neighbourhood stalwart has lost a bit of lustre over the years but it's still popular for a weekday lunch, a meal or a drink anytime nothing much else is open. Their patio is both north and east facing and food options range from sweet potato fries to a surf and turf.

More Patio Options
Depending on the time and day of the week, a few other Liberty Village restaurants and cafes might have their patios open. Best bets are Liberty Noodle, Merci Mon Ami, The Roastery and some of the spots on Atlantic Avenue near King St.
