Tacos have proliferated in Toronto over the past decade. From authentic Mexican joints to trendy hangouts you can pretty much get tacos all over the city these days.

Here are my picks for the top tacos in Toronto by neighbourhood.

Annex

Toronto's original Playa Cabana location is still a worthy destination to get your taco on. Tacos here come four per order in varieties like fish, octopus and chicken.

Baby Point

Mad Mexican is a taco house on Jane. Each order of tacos is served with a range of house salsas, and come in options like the Yucatecan Pollo Pibil loaded with slow roasted chicken, and the Carnitas De Michoacan, featuring braised pork.

Beaches

Xola is a tiny taqueria where snagging a table can be the devil, but take-away orders are a sure thing. Highlights on the menu include the Tacos de Cochinita Pibil featuring traditional slow cooked pork marinated with achiote.

Bloordale Village

Latin World is a casual spot for imported Latin American products and weekday deals on dollar tacos. All tacos here are garnished very simply with onion and cilantro, served with lime, and are made using corn tortillas grilled to order.

Danforth

El Charro is a humble but super-traditional Mexican street food spot near Broadview and Danforth. On the menu, you'll find a variety of tacos available in soft shell or crisp corn shells. 

Distillery District

When you're done gawking at the breathtaking interior of El Catrin grab an order of two tacos to accompany your margarita. Adobo chicken, crispy fried cod and sauteed shrimp are just a few of the ones you can order.

Dundas West

Good Hombres is part-tortilla factory and wholesaler, part taqueria, and little sibling to renowned taco spot Campechano. Tacos are fairly priced and come loaded with fillings like crunchy beer-battered haddock fillet.

Entertainment District

Tasty Mexican fare from Pancho Y Emiliano can be found beyond Kensington Market. The King West location is home to nine different types of tacos including carne asada and carnitas.

Financial District

Inside Toronto's elevated food court Assembly Chef's Hall is where you'll find Colibri. Tacos aren't necessarily cheap here but they do come in many flavours. There's Baja fish as well as lamb barbacoa tacos here.

High Park

Viajero Cantina is a local go-to for tapas and tacos. A selection of widely varying tacos are $5 each across the board. Chimichurri beef is a  popular selection that brings together tenderloin, a creamy poblano and corn mix, and an herby chimichurri sauce.

Keelesdale

El Nahual is a hidden gem. Most tacos are $3.75 or 3 for $10, including a cod marinated in oregano and cilantro. If that doesn't tickle your fancy, you can't go wrong with the carnitas.

Kensington Market

There are lots of really great tacos in Kensington, but the Gobernador at Seven Lives takes the top spot. When the craving strikes, it's like no other taco will do.

King West

While Anejo may be dedicated to all things tequila don't pass up a chance to indulge in their taco offerings. Crispy tilapia, pork, and mushroom are just a few of the varieties available here. 

Koreatown

Tacos El Asador is a Toronto institution that's been slinging El Salvadorian favourites long before the current taco craze. The one-room cantina is always buzzing with patrons packed shoulder-to-shoulder at picnic tables as they devour soft tacos and crispy hard shells.

Leslieville

Tacos at Chula Taberna Mexicana are all dressed uniquely rather than with the same standard toppings for each. Opt for the carnitas which comes with pickled cabbage and pineapple salsa, but also salsa verde and chicharron for a little salty crunch.

Liberty Village

This 'hood goes beyond great brunch fare. Make your way to Libertad on Jefferson to sink your teeth into some Mexican tacos. On the dinner menu are six different taco options including braised beef tongue. 

Little Italy

La Cantina Del Pueblo is a spot for freshly made corn tacos and juicy lamb barbacoa. This casual restaurant will definitely hit the spot when you're craving some Mexican food.

North York

Barbacao, pastor and cochinita pibil are just few of the options when it comes to tacos at the takeout spot La Chabelita.

Ossington

Papi Chulo's is a Mexican snack bar from the same folks behind Greek & Co. After you're done chowing down on some Fries Supreme start digging into some Beyond Meat tacos. 

Parkdale

If you love tacos and cocktails, then Grand Electric is the place for you. You can't go wrong with an order of bourbon and and an assortment of beef cheek, pork belly, and crispy cauliflower tacos.

Queen West

Frisaca is a low-key restaurant serving hearty servings of Mexican grub. There are three types of tacos here including the Rude Rabbit vegan comes with prickly pear cactus, three types of sauteed peppers, and a side of salsa and guac. 

Riverside

La Carnita boasts a variety of locations around the city, and that includes one on Queen East. All your favourites like their fried fish In Cod We Trust and fried chicken thigh Pollo Frito can be found here.

Roncesvalles Village

Cinco Mexican Restaurant mainly specializes in gourmet tacos served on blue corn tortillas. A real standout here is their Marisco gourmet taco, which contains octopus marinated in a vinaigrette and grilled whole, along with shrimp and dark-beer-battered fish.

Scarborough

Mexitaco resided on Bloor for sixteen years, but they’ve since brought it back to their own neighbourhood, setting up shop on Victoria Park. Tacos are clearly a go-to here and an order of the carne asada will surely satisfy.

St. Clair West

Found inside a butcher shop, Itacate is a small, family-run taqueria that looks like it's straight out of Mexico City. Don't be scared to try the cow tongue taco—it just melts away in your mouth.

West Queen West

If you're on the hunt for a vegetarian taco joint in Toronto look no further than Tacos Rico. The folks behind Grand Electric dish out items like vegan Swiss chard and mushroom tacos.

Yonge & Eglinton

Clandestina Tacos is a small Mexican taqueria that serves up bite-size, tacos with either confit pork, marinated chicken, or baja fish fillings.
