Toronto donut shop permanently closing after 22 years due to rent increase

A Toronto business run by a couple for over 20 years will be permanently closing at the end of the month.

Coffee Dome & Donuts at 2223 Kingston Rd. in Scarborough has been a humble community hub for 22 years, but owner Bipin Patel is closing down as he can no longer afford the rent.

He tells blogTO that the lease was not renewed as the landlord wanted to double their rent.

Patel first opened up Coffee Dome in November 1998, working together with his wife and a small handful of employees.

A post about the closure in a local neighbourhood group attracted lots of attention, racking up dozens of comments.

"A great spot lost," one person commented.

Many people commented on how great the owners were, writing comments such as "Lovely people" and "the owners are so nice." Folks also reminisced about their cornmeal muffins, and of course their donuts.

Patel says he's not sure what the space will turn into, but thinks it might become a real estate office.

The last day for Coffee Dome & Donuts will be September 29.
