Toronto bakery shuts down original location after landlord doubles rent

A popular Toronto bakeshop just shut down one of their locations for good after their landlord more than doubled their rent.

Purveyors of some of the best pies in Toronto for the past several years, it's safe to say that Harbord Street bakeshop, Sweetie Pie, has amassed something far beyond a cult following.

For the past four years, the homey bakery that sits at the corner of Harbord and Grace has been a go-to for hungry patrons to pick up a sweet treat, a particular favourite among the dog- and human child parents stopping in from nearby Bickford Park.

So popular are the goodies coming out of Sweetie Pie, in fact, that within a year of opening their initial location, the business blossomed to four locations in Toronto, one in Unionville and a production facility.

In the years since then, Sweetie Pie now operates ten locations in Toronto and the GTA. Well, actually nine, as owner Tina Hatton recently took to social media to announce the closure of the business' Harbord location.

Back on July 4, Tina broke the news through a lengthy post on Instagram, announcing that, in the wake of the shop's four-year anniversary, the shop would be shutting down.

The reason behind the closure wasn't because of financial troubles for the bona fide neighbourhood staple, Tina writes in the caption, but because of a lease dispute with a new landlord.

"Recently the building 326 Harbord St was sold. Our lease was up for renewal and the new owner sent us the lease the last week of June," the caption reads.

"We were expecting an increase however we were not expecting that the rent would be more than double with another increase yearly after that."

She goes on to explain that, after working hard to secure a mutually beneficial agreement with the landlord to no avail, the shop was left with no choice but to shut down.

Come July 29, Tina once again took to Instagram to issue a heartfelt — albeit tearful — goodbye as the shop marked its last day of service.

"I just wanted to say thank you," Tina says in the video, "I wanted to say thank you to everyone in the Harbord Village community and the Bickford Park community and all the dog moms, dads, families and kids that came into our store for the last four years."

Even though Sweetie Pie Harbord is now officially closed, it's not all bad news; Tina confirms in the caption of the post that they've "secured a spot at Bloor and Bathurst in Mirvish village to reopen," with an optimistic opening date of this November.

In the meantime, you can visit any of Sweetie Pie's other Toronto locations in North York, The Well, Queen West, Leaside, The Distillery District, Yonge and Lawrence, First Canadian Place and Yonge and Dundas.
