Apple picking at orchards near Toronto is now open for the season

Apple picking at orchards near Toronto and across Ontario have started early this year.

Whether you're hoping to pluck a quick snack right off the tree or collect ingredients for a fresh apple pie, orchards near Toronto are here for you to partake in the wholesome late-summer activity of apple picking.

While, at the moment, we're currently in the thick of peach and corn season, the wickedly warm summer we've had this year means apple trees are eagerly entering the early stages of growing their fruits, meaning that your chance to pick your own apples is already here.

Winning the award for earliest apples in the region, Hamilton's The Apple Orchard is already open for Paula Red apple picking, and you can also pick up some raspberries and sunflowers during your visit.

Admission to the farm is $11 for adults and $10 for kids, and you'll pay $2.25/lb for your apples. You can also hop on a free wagon ride that's included in the price of your ticket.

Stouffville's Applewood Farm is planning to open their orchards to the public on Saturday, Aug 31, allowing you to fill a 10lb bag of fresh fruits for $20 plus a $12 admission fee to the farm.

Another quintessential late-summer experience, they've also opened their sunflower field as of Monday, Aug 5, so you can fill your social feed with sunny, golden pics.

Getting an early start to the season, Chudleigh's Entertainment Farm in Milton will be opening their orchard on Aug 15, offering over 18 different varieties of apple which will be available at different points throughout the season.

The first apples of the season are Sunrise, with other varietals like Ginger Gold, Wealthy and Silken ripening over the course of the month.

Dixie Orchards in Caledon, which also offers pumpkin and hazelnut picking in the fall, will be opening up for apple picking on Aug 24, with the early varietals like Sunrise, Ginger Gold, Paula Red and Bubblegum.

Walk-ins are permitted, but the farm recommends you book a ticket in advance — especially for weekends — which are available for purchase now through their website for $6.

To get your paws on some organic eats, Organics Family Farm in Markham is kicking off their season on Aug 22 after particularly fruitful strawberry and raspberry seasons earlier this summer.

Their earliest varieties are Pristine, Ginger Gold, Red Free and Sunrise, which you can fill a complimentary 5lb bag with for your entry fee of $16. An additional 5lb bag is another $12, $24 for a 10lb bag or $48 for 20lbs.

You can begin picking Melba apples starting on Aug 13 at King City's Pine Farms Orchard, at a fee of $2.35 per pound of apples plus a $10 admission charge.

They're walk-in only and occasionally have to close their doors when and if the farm reaches capacity, so plan to arrive early to get your best pick of the litter.
