Toronto bakery known for its Montreal-style bagels has permanently closed
A bakery known for producing some of the best bagels in Toronto has closed permanently.
While the war between New York- and Montreal-style bagel lovers wages on and will — I hate to say it — forever, Kensington Market's Nu Bugel has consistently earned gold stars for the camp in support of the boiled variety of the breakfast baked goods.
It's even managed, I contend, to convert a number of staunch New York supporters in its time.
A neighbourhood fixture for more than a decade, Nu Bugel went above and beyond merely filling a bagel shop-shaped hole in the community, they did it with delightfully chewy bagels with shiny shells, sold by the dozen or whipped up into a sandwich.
After an 11-year stint in their Kensington Market location, though Nu Bugel has quietly closed their doors permanently, marking the closure of their last remaining brick and mortar location.
Earlier this year, the bakery closed their Yonge and Eglinton location after a short-lived stint in the area, with locals decrying a dip in the quality and freshness of the bagels (though, it should be noted, the Kensington location rarely, if ever, received the same criticism.)
At the time of publication, Nu Bugel has not responded to blogTO's request for comment on the reasoning behind the closure, so there's no news on whether a new location for the bakery is on the horizon.
Nu Bugel was located at 240 Augusta Avenue.
