Bite Lip Lab
Bite Lip Lab is a Toronto-based cosmetics brand that manufactures and sells organic, edible lipstick and other beauty products out of the former Czehoski space on Queen. Founder and creator Susanne Langmuir's motto is, "You eat what you put on your lips, so your lipstick should be good for you."
As a beauty entrepreneur for sixteen years, Langmuir felt frustrated by her inability to find a high performance lipstick manufactured with quality natural ingredients, so she decided to just make her own. That exploded into being retailed exclusively at Sephora, and now, customers are brought into the experience with custom lipstick made before your eyes.
The space is super fun and happy, with colourful lip motifs all over the windows and walls. The consultation bar takes up most of the space, and their super cool lab is at the back.
A display wall as soon as you walk in shows various products ($25 - $30) you can pick up quickly rather than going the whole nine yards with a custom shade. This is the Amuse Bouche line.
Their humongous shade library is shown in apothecary-like drawers, and you'll notice that fitting with the edible theme all the colours are named after foods.
You start the process of custom making a lipstick by picking from one of the two hundred shades in their library, which could seem either exciting or intimidating. Lip Lab experts can help you choose a shade complementing your skin tone and personal style.
Once you've done that, you can choose from eight flavours like coconut and mango in a combo of up to two flavours, and then choose between Glossy Sheer, Matte Creme or their signature Amuse Bouche finish.
They heat the mixture at a low temp in a microwave then whip it up in a low speed centrifuge. After that it's poured into a mold on a flat top freezer.
Your consultant then provides a little kitchen timer to show how much time you have to wait, and of course will pleasantly chat with you more as your wriggle with anticipation. It takes seven minutes for the lipstick to solidify.
When time's up, they pop the molded lipstick into their exclusive flagship packaging in a feat of what feels like a combination of art, science, and magic.
Getting one walk-in a la carte custom lippy is $55, $80 for two. The custom hour process with consultation and two lipsticks is $150.
