Timbuk2
Timbuk2 has been revolutionizing the world of bags since its inception in 1989.
Founded by bike messenger Rob Honeycutt, it's evolved from crafting messenger bags in a humble garage into a global brand known for its customizable (and durable) bags and travel luggage.
After struggling to find a bag that met his specific needs, Honeycutt took matters into his own hands and designed what is now considered the brand's iconic 3-panel Classic Messenger Bag.
The bag's ingenious designs quickly caught the eye of his friends, who clamoured for their own versions in unique colours. Thus, the concept of customizable bags was born, allowing people to personalize their bags with various colours and fabrics.
Timbuk2 first opened its doors in 2014 and now gives anyone the chance to browse the brand's vast array of practical and sustainably-made bags, right in the bustling heart of Queen Street West.
The classic messenger bag is still one of their bestsellers, but now the offerings have expanded, with the smallest style selling for $109 and the largest retailing for $139.
While Timbuk2 still boasts a solid collection of cycling packs and messenger bags, its product range has expanded over the years to include work bags, travel luggage, and small everyday carry bags.
In fact, on the wall opposite the messenger bag, you'll find their collection of bags that are specially designed for working professionals looking for simple silhouettes and seamless designs, with work bags and backpacks ($109-$320) and an array of totes ($39-$219).
If you're looking to customize your accessory, you can head to the back of the store where you'll get to customize and even create your own designs, with different type of materials, colours, and styles to choose from.
Though every bag comes with a lifetime warranty, the company also has in-house initiatives, like Repair & Reuse (repairing bags for as long as possible to keep them out of landfills) and a trade-in program where you can bring in your gently-used bags to get a 20 per cent discount on a new one.
The traded bags are then donated to Charlie's FreeWheels, a non-profit organization focused on youth empowerment.
The brand is also actively transitioning its fabrics to recycled materials and offers an "Eco" collection that's made from post-consumer materials. They've also recently introduced 32 new eco-friendly nylon colours to their customizer.
Today, the Queen Street shop remains the only Timbuk2 store in Canada.
In 2020, the brand expanded its reach by launching a website allowing shoppers from all corners of Canada to access their range of bags and accessories.
You can find Timbuk2 at 359 Queen Street West.
