Taking Stock at Caban's Closing Sale

On Queen West today many shops were slow to sell in the rainy weather, but one store surprised me - Caban's flagship store was having a big blowout sale - and it was packed. BlogTO announced recently that Caban would be closing its doors but most I spoke to thought it would only be the Caban shops housed in Loblaws locations. Seeing the extent of this sale I knew it was all over - but not before I got in to scoop up some deals too.

The sign in the window said "Up to 70% Off". Inside, some things were already marked down and an additional 20-40% would be taken off depending on the item. Kitchen, bath and furniture items for the most part were only 20% off, a $60 dollar book I'll go back for had a marked discount of 30%, and some $2 bamboo shoots I bought were 40% off; nothing had a noticeable 70% off tag.

The sale was good, but not "closing sale good". I'd definitely had better deals at the 50% off for friends and family days. Would've been great to grab some jeans on sale but the 20% discount wasn't enough to lure me into me purchasing a pair, so I ended up with some of their slick Danish-designed housewares (I was so happy when they started carrying Stelton) and champagne glasses - one can never have enough.

Though I was hoping one day to toast Caban's US expansion - instead I'll have to say goodbye to the 6-year-old franchise. Maybe I'll mourn its demise with a spill of bubbly on the hardwood floor while I throw on Buddha Bar and whip something up from Balthazar's cookbook.
