The Toronto Week of Style

The Toronto Week of Style 2008

The Toronto Week of Style launches this week at the Burroughes Building (639 Queen Street West) and runs from May 28th to May 31st. In its second year, the focus of the event will be to celebrate the fusion of sustainability, multiculturalism and fashion. The three day extravaganza encompasses 11 shows and features over 60 designers.

According to Executive Producer, Zaigham Zulqernain, "fashion is the foundation of style and will always remain an important part of it." Likewise, it is important to remember that fashion is simply one aspect of style.

Some of the highlights of the event include a celebration of the South Asian and Native communities, models from the Are You a Style Icon Model Search, and designers who will be showcased on the runways in groups (another first for commercial week of fashion ventures).

The event began in 2004 because of a lack of support within the Canadian fashion industry to showcase, promote, and support young and aspiring talent. Moreover, The Toronto Week of Style gives people an opportunity for people to speak directly with the designers in charge of creating the clothing, which better helps us redefine our concept of fashion.

Things that I am interested in seeing include Greenisblack (Canada's most forward-thinking fashion show on sustainability), The Future (showcasing the brightest minds in fashion from Ryerson University), and The Art of Denim.
