The Spring Clothing Show

The spring Clothing Show is on this weekend at the Better Living Centre at Exhibition Place. Celebrating its 32nd year the show features apparel and accessories from local designers and retailers. With creations that range from vintage to eco-friendly to cutting edge I can't think of a better way to squander your tax return.

After feeling slightly overwhelmed with the labyrinth of vendors on display at this year's show I'm offering up this helpful list of DOs and DON'Ts to all the fashionistas planning on attending this weekend.

DO: Figure out where the Better Living Centre is before you head on over. After hopping off the streetcar I managed to spend roughly 20 minutes walking around Exhibition Place before finding the correct building.

DON'T: Attend the show with a large group; you'll only increase your chances of getting irritable or losing one another. Go it alone or take along a trusted friend who will give you their honest opinion on whether or not that reworked vintage dress actually looks good on you.

DO: Choose function over fashion when deciding what to wear to the show, sure those four inch gladiator heels might look fabulous but with over three hundred booths to visit you're better off opting for a more practical footwear option.

DON'T: Assume you'll be able to try everything on, change rooms if they exist are makeshift and don't offer much in the way of privacy.

DO: Plan ahead if you don't have much time. The show's website has a list of all of their vendors and booth numbers as well as helpful maps that will help you strategize you leave...and make sure to pick up your complimentary Clothing Show tote on the way in - this eco friendly reusable bag is perfect for carrying all your new purchases.

DON'T: Assume that independent designers = big price tag. There are tons of deals to be found. If you don't have the budget to splurge you can always rummage for bargains in the Sample Sales section and if you've got no cash to spare you can simply browse in the artists gallery or check out one of the many runway shows happening throughout the weekend.

DO: Remember to bring lots of cash, as many vendors don't accept credit or debit. There are ATM machines at the show although they are terribly slow, if they work at all, and are sure to have long line ups.

DON'T: Be afraid to barter, some vendors are wiling to make a deal especially if you're buying multiple pieces...and be sure to take advantage of the free readmission and come back on Sunday afternoon, vendors will often decrease their prices as the weekend comes to an end.

DO: Take a break from shopping. Fashion lovers should check out the Century of Fashion Competition display in the Vintage section where collectors are showcasing pieces that depict the historical evolution of fashion throughout the 20th century.

The Spring Clothing Show show runs Friday 3pm-9pm, Saturday 11am-9pm and Sunday 11am-7om. Tickets are $8 online or $10 at the door and with free readmission you can shop all weekend long while supporting Toronto's local fashion community.
