Queen St. spa looks to offer booze with its Brazilians

Two Advils are great, sure, but the next time you venture out to get hair venomously ripped from your most intimate of areas, how about a stiff drink instead? Or two — you know — just to make sure the memory is nicely muddled.

That's the plan for The Ten Spot on West Queen West, which has recently applied for a liquor license (and will later follow suit with its Leslieville and soon-to-open Bloor West Village locations). Ten Spot Managing Director Lisa Kozoriz tells me the original Queen St. location used to host "martini and manicure" events back when the spa opened several years ago, until an anonymous spoilsport filed an official complaint.

"We were busted," Kozoriz says. "So we shut that down pretty quickly."

But then, this past summer, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario amended its existing licensing regulations to allow businesses other than restaurants and bars to apply for a sales license. That amendment meant that places such as art galleries, bookstores, and yes — salons — would no longer have to exclusively rely on special event permits to sell alcohol. While the change didn't receive a whole lot of attention, it was certainly noticed by Ten Spot owner Kristen Gale.

"That day," Kozoriz says, "Kristen got on the horn." Kozoriz adds that there are a variety of hoops they have to jump through before they can start slinging martinis (including coordinating with Toronto Public Health and undergoing an additional building inspection) but that she hopes to have the license approved by early summer.

"Everything has been going well," she says. "But as with any permit, these things just take time." While the official bar menu has not yet been decided, Kozoriz says The Ten Spot is planning to offer wine and beer (likely craft or local brews) and a variety of specialty cocktails.
