The Sea Inside

Well, if I had any intention of peeling off my layers of blankets, brushing away the snack crumbs littered all around me, and moving away from my couch on this most disgustingly freezing Friday, I would head to see The Sea Inside, which opens at the Cumberland this eve. To give you a gist of the story, immensely versatile Javier Bardem (of Before Night Falls fame) plays in this true story about a man who fights in a 30 year campaign to win the right to end his own life. You see, a dreamy dive into Spanish waters in his mid-twenties, left him a paraplegic.

There is a lot going on in this film, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film backs that up... I won't even get into the Oscar buzz. Director Alejandro Amenabar who worked his magic on eerie The Others outdoes himself with this Spanish gem that is not only stunning to watch, but also explores some controversial waters.
