Genie's still in a bottle
The Genie Awards, celebrating the best in Canadian cinema were presented last night in English, but received in French. I guess that's what happens when 3 of the 5 nominations for Best Motion Picture were from Quebec.
Sadly, while I heard about some of the nominated films, I had not seen one. But because I sat through the 90 minute show, I have an inkling to go see all of them now. Too bad, they're not in theatres anymore.
Les Triplettes de Belleville won for Best Motion Picture beating out some rather fantastic looking films such as Mémoires Affectives avec Roy DuPuis et Ma Vie En Cinémascope. I suspect it's because of the Oscar win the year previous. How they *just* won is beyond me. The movie is already released on DVD.
Love, Sex and Eating the Bones received good airtime but were shut out of the awards. I also suspect Being Julia was given a professional nod because of uber Canuck producer Robert Lantos, but that's just me and my political film conspiracies.
Host Andrea Martin did her best to liven up the rather lukewarm crowd in the Metro Convention Centre though most of the humour was lost in the acceptance speeches as my understanding of French and Quebeçois (oui, c'est une difference) is sub-par.
The only thing that was surprising was that Resident Evil: Apocalypse received the Golden Reel Award which goes to the highest grossing Canadian Film. ... Aside from keeping Toronto cast and crews employed ... exactly how Canadian was the film?
Blurred lines aside ... release these films on DVD already. I've got my popcorn ready.
