WSFF: Short on Big Appetites

Perhaps one of the most enjoyable programmes I've screened throughout the entire festival was INT 5: Healthy Appetites ... and we don't mean appetites as in just food.

It started with the hilariously insightful FRIED RICE from the Netherlands about a butcher who adds Fried Rice to his deli menu to the increasing chargrin of his daughter ... whom he adopted from China. Not liking the questions she's getting from the customers, she decided to teach him a lesson in fusion.

BIRTHDAY from Singapore felt very wannabe Wong Kar Wai-ish. While I enjoyed watching it, I couldn't help but feel sad over the lost innocence of the young couple deciding on how much they can afford to spend on their son's birthday.

Meals take a backseat on the floor to HIS PASSIONATE BRIDE an animated short of a love story. Raw and sexy with body parts and appendages bouncing about, it's less about the actual cartoon and more about your reaction to it.

EATING was a reflective tale of a man in an Overeater's meeting recalling how his relationship with food developed. While the subject material was very sad, I couldn't help but think I've seen this before on many talk shows.

The documentary RECYCLE follows Miguel Diaz as he scours through other people's trash in Echo, Park Los Angeles attempting to survive.

The very cute CANDY VIOLA teaches you that revenge is sweet ... very sweet ... with chocolate, marshmellows and candied cherries. Yum!

In the experimental animated INTERLUDE, I tried to find Nemo in this visual array of fishes and sea creatures that just swam through the frames until it ended.

Trying to find the perfect meal, a homeless boy in DOG'S LIFE uses his smarts to create the perfect night for him and his date.

How hard is it to get a decent meal in peace? In SHOCK AND AWE apparently it is quite difficult for a family in war torn Baghdad. While there were no subtitles, I'm wondering if they did that on purpose or if it was an accident.

After the screening, my taste buds were whet and I walked myself over to the closest restaurant that served noodle soup.
