There is a wonderful double bill taking place at Cinematheque tonight. Two important films from two important masters in the field are being screened at Jackman Hall as part of Cinematheque's impressive Summer Season. Tickets are (at the time of this writing) still available for both features - although only a small number are available for tonight's second feature.

The first key screening takes place at 6:30 PM. Jean-Luc Godard's 1966 hit Masculine Feminine has the privilege of being shown in new-print form. Cinematheque's website boasts that this print has received "delirious reviews" and that this will probably be the only chance for Torontonians to catch this "ineffably gorgeous new print". Interesting stuff.

The second screening is equally as important as the first - even though the website fails to mention any delirious reviews regarding the print. Federico Fellini's masterpiece 8 1/2 will be shown at 8:45 PM. Again, the screening takes place at Jackman Hall. The story follows a film director's surrealistic search to end a creative block and properly piece together the epic film he is working on. It is an Italian film - it can lag at times, and, according to my friend (although I never noticed because I was busy reading the subtitles), the dubbing is atrocious. But the lagging shots and the drifting camera seem to add to the dream-like journey Guido is on. And the dubbing can be ignored by properly regarding the pristine subtitles this print likely possesses.
