Gift Recommendations: Films

The trick to excellent film gifts is to get the ones you can watch over and over and over again (which may not be the top grossing movies of '05).

Given the 'multiple viewing' criteria, this does lean my list towards the comical. Dancer in the Dark is one of the best movies ever, but it's not something you just get a craving for. So keep in mind that brilliant titles like Donnie Darko aren't being omitted because I don't love them, but rather because I can only handle so much bleakness.

In my humble opinion, here's what stands the test of time, and a quote to prove it.

New School

Sin City -
It's time to prove to your friends that you're worth a damn. Sometimes that means dying, sometimes that means killing a whole lot of people

Napoleon Dynamite -
You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills. Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.

Harold and Kumar Go To Whitecastle
(Neil Patrick Harris as himself!) Yeah, I've been craving burgers, too. Furburgers. Come on, dudes, let's pick up some trim at a strip club. The Doogie line always works on strippers.

Old School

Princess Bride -
You made one of the classic blunders. The most famous being never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well known is this - never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! (laughs evilly, suddenly drops dead).

Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb -
Gentlemen! You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!

Clue -
No, communism was just a red herring.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.
(or Life of Brian
He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy)

Best in Show -
We could not talk or talk forever and still find things to not talk about.

There you have it. Don't forget the popcorn.
