Going Over the Top with Tiffany

Before there was Britney and Christina, we had Debbie Gibson, Alanis and Tiffany.

Perhaps best known for her cover of the Tommy James and the Shondells cover, I Think We're Alone Now, Tiffany is the subject of a feature documentary, oddly titled I Think We're Alone Now, which helps kick off the Over the Top Fest tonight at The Royal cinema.

The all-ages music and arts festival runs until May 4 and also includes rare musical performances and theatrical productions along with several film premieres.

I Think We're Alone Now follows the lives of Jeff and Kelly, two dedicated Tiffany fans who are really just lonely people with unhealthy clinging obsessions.

Jeff is a 50-year-old from Santa Cruz, California and has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. Kelly is a 35-year-old intersexed person from Denver, Colorado who claims she and Tiffany were teenage friends.

We now live in an age where celebrity obsession has taken on new proportions, so this kind of story may not seem out of the ordinary. But for some, the fine line between fan and stalker are easily blurred.

But come on, this is Tiffany we're talking about! The same young woman who, in the late '80s did singing mall tours and had NKOTB open for her. Oh, and stay tuned for a New Kids' reunion tour this summer.

Director Sean Donnelly will be in attendance for a Q&A session after the film, which plays tonight at The Royal (608 College St.) at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.
