TIFF Subscription Series

TIFF announces food, film, science focused film series

TIFF has announced three new subscriptions set to launch in February 2012. The series — Food on Film, Books on Film, and Science on Film — will each feature six screenings followed by a guided discussion. Subscriptions are currently on sale for TIFF members and will go on sale for non-members on today. A couple of the series include offers for free stuff for those who sign up early, so interested parties may want to act fast if the incentives prove enticing. Many guest speakers will be announced in the upcoming weeks, but for now, here is an overview of what each series will be about.

Books on Film (Mondays at 7pm)
This is the second season for the Books on Film series which brings together literature and film buffs to examine great cinema that began as outstanding literature. It's basically a book club where you get to watch movies like Felicia's Journey, Affliction, and Howard's End. Eleanor Wachtel from CBC's Writers and Company will host the sessions with guest filmmakers and writers who will discuss the art of putting books on the big screen. The first 100 people to subscribe to this series will get a free copy of each featured book. Guests will include director Atom Egoyan, author Russell Banks, and director James Ivory.

Food on Film (Tuesdays at 6:30pm)
A series made for those who love food a cinema, two passions that overlap more than one might think. Jason Bangerter, Executive Chef of Luma and O&B Canteen, will talk with guest chefs from the Food Network and other culinary experts about two things that, in my opinion, belong together — food and film. A special dish will be served at Luma before and after each event (this will cost extra but is guaranteed to be better than popcorn) and all Food on Film subscribers will receive a recipe card for each of the dishes. Guests and films include, chef Chuck Hughes on Vatel, and chef Jacquy Pfeiffer on Kings of Pastry.

Science on Film (Wednesdays at 7pm)
This series is basically Bill Nye the Science Guy for gown-ups. Former Daily Planet host, Jay Ingram, will use films like Best in Show, Barney's Version, and The Day the Earth Stood Still as a starting point for awesomely geeky scientific discussions. The audience will learn about the theories and formulas that are used in the making of these and other films that brush up against science. Guests will include, Dr. Pamela J. Reid , makeup artist Adrien Morot, and science-fiction writer Robert J. Sawyer. The first 100 people to subscribe will get a signed copy of Daily Planet: The Ultimate Book of Everyday Science by the host.

Subscriptions to each series are $180 for non-members and $140 for TIFF members. For tickets, phone 416.599.TIFF.
