1 Hotel is a luxurious eco-friendly hotel and plant oasis in King West.

The opulent space comes as the sixth location of the U.S. boutique chain opened by Starwood Capital and CEO Barry Sternlicht, who also created W Hotels and made St. Regis Hotels what it is.

Following other locations in Miami, Brooklyn and Manhattan, West Hollywood, and their first international offshoot in China, this is the very first of its kind in Canada.

1 Hotel TorontoThe lodging that tends to attract environmentally-conscious travellers for whom money is no object, opened in partnership with Mohari, owners of the building that used to be the Thompson Hotel

1 Hotel TorontoLike every other location in the chain, you get a good sense of place with the design (done by Rockwell Group) paying homage to the surrounding natural environment.

In other words: a visit to the lavish hotel feels like an excursion to Ontario's cottage country.

1 Hotel TorontoMuted colours are inspired by the lake and Eramosa stone glimmers from behind the reception desk. Elmwood flooring is made from old barn materials while hundreds of tables and other pieces of furniture have been recreated from fallen Toronto trees by Just Be Woodsy.

1 Hotel TorontoThere are also 3,300 plants on the property and a daily market stand in the lobby where you can find fresh from the farm produce.

1 Hotel TorontoOn-site composting turns all organic wet waste into reusable soil for both the thousands of plants and the garden pavilion on the east side of the property. Farmers' markets will be hosted here twice a month alongside 100km Foods in the future.

1 Hotel TorontoHere is also where 40 different fresh herbs, edible flowers, fruits and veggies are grown for the hotel kitchen. Just above the sprouting plants is a native pollinator garden that includes a bee hotel.

1 Hotel TorontoIf you've just come into a stack of money that you don't know what to do with, an overnight stay should be top of the list. There are over 100 rooms in the hotel and 21 of those are luxury suites.

1 Hotel TorontoThe 1,150-square-foot Willow House is the second largest suite after Birch House, which is 2,000-square-feet. The immaculately designed space features a separate living area and full kitchen.

The only thing is one night here will put you out more than a month's worth of rent money.

1 Hotel TorontoLike all of the rooms, 100 per cent organic linens are used for the king bed and filtered water taps along with tumblers from reclaimed wine bottles reduce the need for single-use plastics.

When it comes to meal time, guests and hungry locals alike flock to the main dining space that replaces Thompson Diner, 1 Kitchen

1 Hotel TorontoThe restaurant is open every day of the week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as for weekend brunch. You have the choice between the patio outfront or an airy booth indoors when grabbing a table.

1 Hotel TorontoInside feels a bit like a conservatory with tall open windows and several hanging plants and greenery that I've come to expect in every room.

World-renowned executive chef Derek Powers Jr runs the kitchen that focuses on sustainably sourced farm-to-table food. It's a mostly plant-based menu with burger, steak and lamb options for meat-eaters.

1 Hotel TorontoThe harvest board ($22) comes on refurbished Norway maple and features seasonal veggies, a trio of dips: mushroom pate, romesco, herbed tahini, and root veggie chips for dipping.

There's also the sweet potato and ricotta ravioli ($35). The colourful pasta includes summer black truffle, brown butter lemon, sugar snaps, charred leek and romanesco.

Zucchini blossom tempura ($18) has togarashi seasoning and dill aioli on the side. Lightly fried, it has just the right amount of grease beside the fresh and slightly crunchy zucchini.

1 Hotel TorontoThe Flora Lounge which connects to the lobby is one of the two bars in the hotel. Soon as you spot the eye-catching display and backdrop of the bar, you'll see why it's called Flora. It was created by floral designer Lauren Wilson from foraged flowers, flora and moss in Ontario.

You can also head up to the rooftop, Harriet's for a cocktail, light bites or bottle service every evening Wednesday through Saturday. One of the drinks on menu is the spicy Sienna, their take on a spicy Margherita with Cazadores Blanco Tequila, jalapeno, lime and agave.

Enjoy a panoramic view of the city skyline complete with the CN Tower between sips.

Sun worshippers can also beeline for the pool opposite the rooftop bar where the view only continues. A number of different loungers surround the pool for the perfect place to soak in some sun with a cocktail in hand.
